Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state in Brazil, is a premier ecotourism destination. Nearly 50% of the Amazon River’s population resides in this city, making it the central cultural and economic hub of the Brazilian Amazon. The city offers numerous attractions, both natural and man-made, and its rich history makes Manaus an essential destination for visitors to Brazil.
Manaus, the capital of the Amazonas state in Brazil, has a rich and diverse history. It was founded in 1669, beginning with the construction of forts by the Portuguese to establish their dominance in the region. The settlement was declared a town in 1832 named Manaus, meaning “Mother of the Gods.” In 1848, it was transformed into a city and renamed Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro, only to revert to Manaus in 1856.
The city experienced significant turmoil during the Cabanagem revolt in 1835, where disenfranchised blacks, Indians, and mestizos rose against the political elite. This revolt was marked by severe violence, losing about 40% of the population. The conflict continued until 1840, profoundly impacting the region’s sociopolitical landscape.
Manaus thrived in the late 19th century during the rubber boom, which brought immense wealth to the city. This period of affluence saw the construction of grand architectural projects. The Mercado Adolpho Lisboa, founded in 1882, is a notable example. It was modeled after Paris’s Les Halles market and features a complex bazaar and vibrant fish market. The city’s most iconic structure from this era is the Teatro Amazonas, an opulent opera house built in 1884 for $10 million, reflecting the city’s prosperity and cultural aspirations during the rubber boom.
Despite its former glory, Manaus faced severe economic decline after the rubber tree seeds were smuggled out of the Amazon region. This led to crippling poverty, and the city struggled to maintain basic infrastructure like its electricity lines. However, in the 1950s, Manaus was designated a Duty-Free Zone, which helped to revitalize its economy.
In 2014, Manaus gained international attention as one of the host cities for the World Cup. The construction of the $300 million Arena Amazônia, a 44,300-seat stadium, sparked controversy. The stadium hosted only four games during the tournament and has since been dubbed a “white elephant” due to its infrequent use, with local matches drawing fewer than 1,000 spectators.
Today, Manaus is a popular tourist destination, serving as the traditional starting point for Amazon River cruises. It attracts visitors eager to explore the vast and vibrant Brazilian Amazon.
Since many anglers ask how much to tip the guides and lodge staff, here is a guideline (based on double occupancy). Most anglers tip about $55 per day per person ($30 for guides and $25 for staff). Here is an example:
4 Nights / 3.5 Days Fishing Trip (double occupancy)
Staff Gratuity = $100 (per angler)
Guide Gratuity = $100 (please tip double this amount if fishing SINGLE)
TOTAL: $200 (per angler)
NOTE: An envelope is provided for each angler at the end of the stay for the staff gratuity. We kindly ask you to tip your guide directly at the end of your last fishing session.
